David J tracks two new songs

I spent today recording a couple of songs for Mr. David J. of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame. This has been a lot of fun and very rewarding. I grew up on a steady diet of Bauhaus, Joy Division, Sisters Of Mercy and dozens of other similar bands. David’s voice transported me back to my youth and I was in goth heaven all afternoon.

An unexpected bonus from today’s session: we used the piano that I moved in to the studio several months ago (courtesy of Bob Crawford). The piano has a ton of character- it is not a clean pristine instrument, but has lots of warts and wrinkles. For that reason, it hasn’t seen a lot of use yet. I am planning a rehab project, but it is a “long term” plan. The instrument is great for the right kind of track- like the one’s we recorded today. The personality of our piano really brought these songs to a wonderful place- sort of like David singing to you in a dive bar. We were all really digging it.

A further bonus- David sang into the Innertube audio retrofit for one of my Gefell UM70 microphones. He exclaimed “Bloody hell! This mic is wonderful!: I agree. Innertube designed an amazing circuit for the Gefell capsule. I haven’t heard a microphone perform this well in quite some time. A very special sound indeed…..
